Immersion Vaccination of Juvenile Halibut Using Alpha Dip 2100 - June/99

Water in the rearing tanks was lowered to allow for easier capture of the fish. Fish were captured using dip nets, not by seine, and fish were not anesthetized. Water was aerated.

Due to the size of these juveniles, forty at a time were netted into the holding tote, seen in the rearing tank.

Juvenile Atlantic Halibut, , Hippoglossus hippoglossus, hatched spring of 1998, weight of approximately 105 grams.

Once forty juveniles have been captured, the tote (which has a perforated bottom for drainage) is lifted over the side of the rearing tank.

Forty juveniles on their way into immersion vaccine. This tote was also aerated and DO levels were checked often in both totes and in the rearing tank.

Vaccination as per label instructions. The water temperature is approximately 12°C.

While each tote was being vaccinated, forty more juveniles were being netted from the rearing tank.

Vaccination was carefully timed and the fish were constantly observed for the duration of the vaccination.

When vaccination was complete, fish were removed to a large recovery tank and monitored frequently. After one tote has been through the process, another is ready to be vaccinated.
