Section III - HEALTH & FIRST AID INFORMATION


INHALATION: Irritates, remove patient to fresh air and keep warm

INGESTION: Burns, toxic. Give patient a 1% Sodium thiosulfate solution and seek medical attention immediately.

EYE CONTACT: Irritates. Rinse eyes thoroughly with water for 15 minutes, seek medical attention.

SKIN CONTACT: Irritates, stains, may burn. Swab with 1% Sodium thiosulfate solution then wash thoroughly with water. Seek medical attention if burn has occurred.

OTHER HEALTH INFORMATION: Chronic low-level ingestion may cause mental depression, nervousness, insomnia and sexual impotence.

 

Section IV - PHYSICAL DATA

SOLUBILITY IN WATER: soluble

APPEARANCE AND COLOUR: dark red-brown liquid with a characteristic iodine odour and a vinegary overtone.

 

Section V - FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES & PRECAUTIONS: Wear protective clothing and a self-contained breathing apparatus.

UNUSUAL FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS: may emit highly toxic fumes of Iodine and Iodine compounds.

 

Section VI - REACTIVITY

STABILITY: Stable

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur

CONDITIONS & MATERIALS TO AVOID: Interhalogen compounds, diazonium salts, ammonia, phosphorus/ethanol mixture, reducing compounds, alkaloids, starch, tannins.

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Highly toxic fumes of Iodine and Iodine compounds.

 

Section VII - EMPLOYEE PROTECTION

CONTROL MEASURES: Use in a well ventilated area, fume hood preferred.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Self-contained breathing apparatus if using large quantities or if using in a poorly ventilated area.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: Chemical-resistant gloves.

EYE PROTECTION: Safety goggles if splashing is anticipated.

 

Section VIII - ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS: Wear gloves and safety goggles, transfer to salvage container and wash down spill area with plenty of water.

WASTE DISPOSAL: Seek advice of a professional disposal service.
