Section III - HEALTH & FIRST AID INFORMATION

INHALATION: May irritate upper respiratory tract. High concentrations may be anesthetic and/or cause bronchopneumonia or pulmonary edema, or headaches, sleepiness, nausea, confusion, loss of conciousness, digestive and visual disturbances and death.  Remove patient to fresh air. Provide oxygen if breathing is difficult, administer artificial respiration if breathing ceases. Seek medical attention.

INGESTION: May be fatal or cause blindness.  May cause nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, may be anesthetic and intoxicating. Guard against aspiration into lungs, if vomiting occurs spontaneously, keep head below hips to prevent aspiration of liquid into lungs. If patient is conscious, give 1 or 2 glasses of water and induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.

EYE CONTACT: High vapour concentration of liquid contact with eyes causes irritation, tearing and burning.  Flush with water for at least 15 minutes with eyelids open. Seek medical attention.

SKIN CONTACT: Prolonged and repeated contact may cause dryness and irritation. Rinse with water for at least 15 minutes.  Remove contaminated clothing and discard.

OTHER HEALTH INFORMATION:

LD50 = 5-15 g/kg (oral, human)

LD50 = 5.045 g/kg (acute oral, rat)

LD50 = 12.8 g/kg (acute dermal, rabbit)

LD50 = 3.6 g/kg (oral, mouse)

LC50 = 16,000 ppm (8 hour acute inhalation rat)

Human lethal dose, ca 250 ml

Pre-existing eye, skin and respiratory disorders may be aggravated by exposure to this product.  Prolonged or repeated contact with skin can cause defatting and drying of the skin resulting in skin irritation and dermatitis.

FLAMMABLE LIMITS IN AIR; % BY VOL. UPPER: 12.7%

NFPA RATING: HEALTH (1) FIRE (3) REACTIVITY (0)

EXTINGUISHING MEDIA:  Alcohol foam, carbon dioxide, dry chemical

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES & PRECAUTIONS: Use water fog, "alcohol" foam dry chemical or CO2, wear self contained breathing apparatus and cool fire-exposed containers with water.  Closed containers may explode in fire.  Always stay away from ends of container due to explosive potential.

UNUSUAL FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Beware of flashback along vapour trail.

Section VI - REACTIVITY

STABILITY: stable

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: will not occur

CONDITIONS & MATERIALS TO AVOID: Avoid all possible sources of ignition, avoid strong oxidizing agents.  Avoid acids, strong acids or strong bases.  May be corrosive to lead and aluminum.

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Carbon dioxide, Carbon monoxide, Formaldehyde oxides of carbon, and various unidentified organic compounds.

Section VII - EMPLOYEE PROTECTION

CONTROL MEASURES: Use in a well ventilated area. Ensure electrical grounding of metal containers.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Wear an organic vapour mask of self contained breathing apparatus if high vapour concentrations are likely.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: Wear plastic gloves and impervious clothing.

EYE PROTECTION: Wear safety goggles if splashing is likely.  Ensure that eyewash stations and safety showers are proximal to the workstation.

Section VIII - ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS: Local exhaust is acceptable.  Use explosion proof ventilation to prevent vapour accumulation.

SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS: Shut off all possible sources of ignition. Dike spill to prevent its spreading.  Mop small spills up with water an run to waste diluting greatly with water.  For large spills, wear respiratory protection; transfer spill to salvage container using either absorbent material or vacuum.  May be harmful to aquatic life.

WASTE DISPOSAL: Small amounts may be run to waste greatly diluting with water, large amounts must be retained for disposal according to local, provincial and federal guidelines. Consult professional disposal service.

Section IX - REGULATORY CONTROLS

DEPT. OF TRANSPORTATION: Regulated under the Transport of Dangerous Goods Act
