Section III - HEALTH & FIRST AID INFORMATION

INHALATION: Very irritating. Avoid raising dust. If inhalation occurs, remove patient to fresh air and keep warm, seek medical attention.

INGESTION: Assumed harmful. Give patient water and activated charcoal, induce vomiting. Seek medical attention.

EYE CONTACT: Irritating. Rinse immediately with running water for at least 15 minutes, seek medical attention.

SKIN CONTACT: Irritating. Wash with soap and water.

OTHER HEALTH INFORMATION: Suspected carcinogen, LD50 1000 mg/kg orally in rats

MELTING POINT: At 95oC melting and decomposition begins after 3 hours.

SOLUBILITY IN WATER: 150 grams/litre at 25oC, 330 grams/litre at 100oC

APPEARANCE AND COLOUR: White crystalline powder

ODOUR: Weak chlorine smell

pH VALUE: 8 - 10 (0.5% solution in water)

FLASH POINT & METHODS USED: 192oC, closed cup

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES & PRECAUTIONS: Use self-contained breathing apparatus.

UNUSUAL FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Emits toxic Chlorine gas. Decomposes at high temperatures.

STABILITY: Stable under 35oC,

HAZARDOUS POLYMERIZATION: Will not occur

CONDITIONS & MATERIALS TO AVOID: Heat, acids

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: Cl2, HCl, SOx, NOx, CO, CO2

Section VII - EMPLOYEE PROTECTION

CONTROL MEASURES: Handle with adequate ventilation, avoid raising dust.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: Wear dust mask.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: Wear protective gloves, plastic apron and sleeves.

EYE PROTECTION: Wear goggles if dust is anticipated.

Section VIII - ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS: Local exhaust is acceptable

SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS: Wear gloves and dust mask while sweeping up spill. Wash spill area to remove residue.

WASTE DISPOSAL: React with a solution of sodium thiosulfate or sodium sulfite, then run to waste with plenty of water.
