Section V - FIRE AND EXPLOSION HAZARDS

FLASH POINT & METHODS USED: 43oC (closed-cup)

FLAMMABLE LIMITS IN AIR; % BY VOL. LOWER: 4%

FLAMMABLE LIMITS IN AIR; % BY VOL. UPPER: 16%

SPECIAL FIRE FIGHTING PROCEDURES & PRECAUTIONS: Use CO2, dry powder, vapourizing liquids, water spray. The addition of water will increase the intensity of the flames. Wear protective clothing and self-contained breathing apparatus to protect against corrosive vapours.

UNUSUAL FIRE & EXPLOSION HAZARDS: Beware of corrosive, flammable fumes. Liberates explosive H2 gas with addition of water.

Section VI - REACTIVITY

CONDITIONS & MATERIALS TO AVOID: Oxidizers, alkalis, amines

HAZARDOUS DECOMPOSITION PRODUCTS: CO and CO2

Section VII - EMPLOYEE PROTECTION

CONTROL MEASURES: Ideal storage temperature 18-25oC, Store away from flames or sparks.

RESPIRATORY PROTECTION: fume-hood or self-contained breathing apparatus.

PROTECTIVE CLOTHING: Chemical resistant gloves, wear plastic apron and boots for large quantities.

EYE PROTECTION: Wear tight fitting safety goggles.

Section VIII - ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

ENVIRONMENTAL PRECAUTIONS: Use in a well ventilated area

SPILL OR LEAK PRECAUTIONS: Shut off all possible sources of ignition. Wear plastic apron, boots, chemical-resistant gloves and safety goggles. Mop up spill with plenty of water, transferring residue to a salvage container. Hold for disposal.

WASTE DISPOSAL: Small amounts may be run to waste diluting greatly with water. For large spills, seek the advice of a professional disposal service.

OTHER REGULATORY REQUIREMENT: n. av.

Section X - PRECAUTIONS: HANDLING, STORAGE & USAGE

Handle with extreme caution, always wear protective clothing. NEVER add water to acid, to dilute, slowly add acid to water. Adding acetic acid to water produces much heat. Can react vigourously with oxidising materials (especially chromic acid, sodium peroxide, nitric acid). Causes vigourous exothermic polymerisation with acetaldehyde. Acetic acid vapour can ignite with potassium tert-butoxide.
