Biosecurity That Works

March 1, 2003

For Immediate Release

Syndel Laboratories Ltd. and biosecurity partners Vetoquinol and Antec International are pleased to announce that an extensive disinfectant study has shown Virkon and Hyperox to be extremely effective in controlling Infectious Salmon Anemia Virus (ISAV).  The study was conducted at AVC Inc. and confirms results of an earlier RPC (Research Productivity Council) study done for the New Brunswick Salmon Growers Association.  Dr. Jim Brackett, General Manager of Syndel Labs states “ This study confirms that Virkon and Hyperox are the best disinfectant products available for your biosecurity program.”

A titre log reduction of greater than 3.0 – 4.0 (10-3.0 – 10-4.0 change in cell counts) is generally accepted as indicating an effective viral disinfectant.   Under all test conditions both Virkon and Hyperox showed titre log reductions of 5.50 – 5.75.   These conditions include both clean viral samples and those containing a heavy organic load.  Virkon is used at 1:100 and 1:200 dilution and Hyperox is used at 1:128 and 1:256 dilution.

ISAV joins a growing list of pathogens that are rapidly killed by Virkon and Hyperox.  These include important aquatic pathogens including IHNV, Aeromonas and other bacteria, viruses and fungi.

For general disinfection, Virkon is the product of choice.  However, for egg disinfection, Ovadine is still the best.  In the RPC study, Ovadine was effective at controlling ISAV on clean samples (like fish eggs).  Paul Casey Sales and Marketing Manager of Syndel Labs states “Ovadine has been used worldwide for more than 20 years in disinfecting fish eggs exposed to many commercially important diseases with continuing good results.  Furthermore Ovadine is uniquely balanced for use on fish eggs”.

Syndel advocates and encourages all aquaculturists to use proven disinfectants, such as Virkon, Hyperox and Ovadine, as part of their biosecurity program.
