The disinfectant must come into direct contact
with the organism. It is important that surfaces be clean of organic matter
before disinfection This is best done by physically cleaning the surfaces
with soap and water prior to using the disinfectant.
There are three products that can be used for
disinfection of fish eggs. They are Ovadine, Parasite-S and Perox-Aid. All
of these products have been proven safe and effective at the recommended
dose. Most disinfectant products are toxic to fish, so must be used with a
great deal of care around fish.
Parasite-S is used to treat parasites and protozoa
on fish and is safe when label directions are followed. Perox-Aid can also
be used on fish to treat Bacterial Gill Disease. Virkon is a very potent
sanitizer and disinfecting cleaner. Halamid is also used on
fish, especially for treatment of Bacterial Gill Disease.
The choice of disinfectant is affected by not only
cost but also by efficacy, speed of action and other hazard related
concerns.
The
Canadian Aquaculture Institute has produced a reasonable priced video, "Fish Bath Treatments", that
shows in detail the use of these kinds of products.
