The following is an excerpted section from GUIDELINES FOR THE DISINFECTION HYGIENE STANDARDS FOR AQUACULTURE MARINE GROW-OUT OPERATIONS AND ASSOCIATED SERVICES SPECIFIC TO INFECTIOUS SALMON ANEMIA. Prepared by Washburn and Gillis Associates for New Brunswick Department of Fisheries & Aquaculture in 1998. The complete report can be obtained from New Brunswick Department of Fisheries & Aquaculture, PO Box 6000, Fredericton, NB E3B 5H1.

4.2.5        Routine Disinfection Procedures

Routine cleaning and disinfection should be part of normal operating procedures. These should be conducted at ISA negative sites as well. Additional measures are outlined as follows:

Divers

  1. Divers working at ISA positive or ISA suspected cages must disinfect their equipment after each cage. A full immersion dip of 10 minutes in an iodophor at 100 mg/L (Ovadine is well buffered) is recommended.
  2. Suspected ISA infected cages should be dived last on each site and suspected ISA infected sites should be dived last on each day.
  3. Divers working at ISA negative sites who encounter increased mortalities which might be indicative of ISA infection must undergo a full disinfection ( 10 minute immersion dip in an iodophor at 100 mg/L) prior to entering a new cage.
  4. Divers should use a cleaned, disinfected and dried suit and equipment for different ISA negative farms.
  5. Divers suits used on ISA positive farms should remain on that farm.
  6. Divers should use a separate mortality bag in each cage.
  7. Used bags should be disinfected between dives.

Site Personnel and Visitors

  1. Foot dips containing iodophor at a concentration of at least 200 mg/L should be present at all sites and used by all personnel when entering and leaving the site.
  2. Personnel equipment should be used primarily at one site and should be washed in hot water with disinfectant regularly.
  3. Ordinary hand soap and water or hand disinfectants should be present on site.
  4. All sites should have cleaned and disinfected visitor boots and equipment.

The 3 steps to complete disinfection are clean, disinfect, and isolate
