minimized through use of disinfectants in water, on tanks and equipment, and
on eggs. Disinfectants used in aquaculture are aimed at all types of
infectious agents (including bacteria, fungi, viruses and protozoa).
Disinfectants kill disease causing organisms by releasing proper amounts of
chlorine or iodine or other compounds.
The disinfectant must come into direct contact
with the organism. It is important that surfaces be clean of organic matter
before disinfection This is best done by physically cleaning the surfaces
with soap and water prior to using the disinfectant.
